Species

Cervus Elaphus

Red deer were introduced to New Zealand from British Stock between 1851 and the early 1900’s, and are the most widespread deer species found in New Zealand.

Red stag are celebrated for their heavy, impressive antler and are a large bodied species with an average stag weighing around 500lbs. The red stag rut is full of action and our hunters can often witness stag locking heads over hinds and roaring amongst the valleys and ridges of our varied hunting terrain. Because our lodge is based right in the heart of our hunting area you may even have to close your windows to dull the sounds of roaring during the peak of the rut... if you want a good nights sleep that is!! Many of our hunters are so amazed by the roaring, they like to just lie awake and listen... The red stag roar extends from mid-March until mid-April, however the majestic red stag makes for a great hunt and awesome trophy at any time of our season.

Shane’s personal committment to careful game management and ongoing improvement in bloodlines have afforded us the current World Records for Rifle, Muzzle Loader and Bow (details of all records), along with a long list of impressive red stag trophies taken by our hunters who dominate the SCI Record Books.

At Alpine Hunting, you can be assured the quality of your red stag trophy will be matched by an equally first class experience. The abundance of game coupled with Shane’s belief and confidence in his team is such that we offer a personal guarantee in the form of our HUNT SATISFACTION POLICY.

Hunters can select red stag packages from our base level Silver Medal packages right up to our super stags and the occasional record-breaker - you can choose a package with the price level that suits you and our style is to allow for flexibility in the field just in case you wish to upgrade to a larger stag or add additional species as you go!
